Great Torrington is bounded on three sides by
common land which was given to the town in the 12th
century.
These wonderful 365 acres of
common land are freely accessible to all and provide
the natural habitat of a rich variety of flora and
fauna ranging from the challenging 9-hole heathland
golf course in the north; ancient wood and wild flower
meadow in the west; and dropping down to the beautiful
River Torridge Valley to the south of the town.
